England

The northernmost counties of England are some of the least populated of the country. From the Lake District with it's beautiful mountains and vast lakes in the west to undeveloped high moorland in the east. Here many great battles have been fought between the English and the Scots to the north. Because of this bloody border history, the region has more castles and strategic fortifications than any other part of England. Many of them are ruined, but they still play a vital role in the landscape of this beautiful region.
