The European Alps are located in Central Europe and stretch from Austria and Slovenia in the East, through Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany, to France in the west. The Mont Blanc within the Alps is the highest peak in western Europe at 4810m / 15,782ft. The Alps are very extensively travelled in through history, probably no other mountain chain has such an elaborate network of hiking trails. Lower regions and larger towns are all connected by motorways and railways, all of which make the Alps extremely accessible.
