Skaftafellssýsla is an vast area in south-eastern Iceland, split apart in the Vestur and Austur (west and east) Skaftafellssýsla counties. With it's location just south of the Vatnajökull glacier, Europe's largest ice cap, Skaftafellssýsla is the culmination of Iceland's wildernesses. Volcanic eruptions underneath the ice of Vatnajökull are the cause of the ever changing landscapes in this part of country.
How much of a treeless country Iceland is, becomes clear in this photograph. The only vegetation visible for miles and miles are grasses, mosses and shrubs. While it never gets as cold in Iceland as it's name might suggest, the environment is too harsh and the winds are too strong for most plants to live in.
