The Gullfoss is a waterfall in the Hvítá river, a glacier river in Southern Iceland. The water falls down in several steps to plunge a final 32m / 105ft into a big chasm. The large quantities of spray water caused by the falling of the water, produce some beautiful rainbows when sunlight reaches the canyon. The waterfall was named after these rainbows; Gullfoss means golden waterfall.
This photo was photographed at the end of an especially cold period in the otherwise suprisingly mild Icelandic winter. Big parts of the waterfall were frozen due to temperatures below -20°C / -4°F. The clouds in the distance were the first signs of the end of the cold period.
