The Ring Road of Iceland is the country's main road. With a total length of just over 1300km / 800mi, it connects all habitable parts of the country, encircling most of Iceland. The road crosses several vast wildernesses of which the southern Skeiðarársandur was the toughest area to cross. By 1974 the road was finished with the last bridge over the Skeiðará river. Only to be washed away again in 1996 with the eruption of the Grímsvötn volcano and the following jökulhlaup (glacial outburst flood). Although now repaired, the stretch crossing the Skeiðarársandur remains weak. The forces of nature in this tormented region most of the time proof to be stronger than any man-made construction.
