Sicily

The island of Sicily has been shaped and formed by Mt. Etna, a tall active volcano on the island's east coast. The scars of the volcano's big eruptions are very visible everywhere in the landscape. Bare, black solidified lava flows fan out from Mt. Etna's many craters on the summit and mountain flanks. But even though the next big eruption to cover another village by lava might be looming around the corner, Sicily has been heavily populated with many major settlements ever since the ancient Greeks colonised the island around 750BC.
