The Wave is a rock formation in the Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness in Arizona, USA. It's located on the slopes of the Coyote Buttes. The Wave is famous for it's colourful, curvy lines and forms. The rockformation consists of Navajo Sandstone, typical for the region. Old sand dunes turned into hard rock surfaces over time. The visible lines were created when different layers calcified. The shape of The Wave itself was created by erosion by wind and rain.
The area can only be reached by a 13.4km / 8.3mi trackless trail. To protect the region and especially The Wave from getting trampled by tourists, only twenty permits for access are available per day. Lines And Waves is a detail of The Wave.
