The plains of Hato are oftentimes dubbed 'the desert of Curaçao'. With it's rust coloured earth and the occasional cactus as vegetation one could see why. Hato stretches for a bout 10km / 6mi on the north shore of Curaçao and is a barren place. The ever blowing easterly trade winds that transport salty air from the Caribbean sea over the plains, make it a harsh environment for most plants to live in.
