Light Waves

Antelope Canyon, USA

The Antelope Canyon consists of two slot canyons on a Navajo reserve close to Page, Arizona in the USA. Light Waves is a detail of the walls in the Upper Antelope Canyon.

The Antelope Canyon was formed by erosion over a period of millions of years. During monsoon season flash floods transport sand particles under high pressure through the many canyons in the area and create smooth, flowing shapes in the rock. Over time small passageways are eroded away. The Navajo name of the Upper Antelope Canyon is Tse' bighanilini, which means 'the place where water runs through rocks'.

The canyon is mainly lid by indirect sunlight bouncing off the walls. Many shades of bright orange and red are created on the canyon's walls. Only in summer, when the sun is high enough in the sky, some beams of direct light reach the canyon's floors.
