The Northern Territory is largely desert country, covered with spinifex and big red sand dunes. An inhospitable landscape, although people who knew how to tame the lands have survived there for thousands of years.
The southern end of the Northern Territory is often referred to as the Red Centre. With it's bright red soil it's easy to see why this name was chosen for this part of Australia.
