Uluru is probably the most recognizable feature in Australia. Towering 348m / 1142ft above the ground and with a circumreference of 9.4km (5.8mi), it's an impressive sight impossible to miss in the surrounding flat landscape. The rock formation is of great spiritual and cultural significance to the Anangu traditional landowners.
The colour of the slick sandstone seems to be ever changing. At sunrise and sunset Uluru seems to be a glowing red, while during the day it's bright orange. In uncommon periods of rain, small waterfalls appear on the sides of rock and algae give it more of a grey colour.
This image was taken just after sunset from probably the best known viewpoint of Uluru.
