The Blue Mountains is a mountainous region just west of Sydney. With it's proximity to Sydney's metropolitan area, it's surprisingly wild for it's location. It is still relatively easy to get lost in the endless forests in the valleys of the Blue Mountains.
The Blue Mountains proved to be impassable for a long time and it formed a big obstacle for the early European settlers who wanted to move to the west. Little was known of the region on the other side of the mountain range. People thought that fertile lands lay to the west of the Blue Mountains, some even believed China was located on the other side.
The Three Sisters is a famous rock formation in the Blue Mountains as seen from Katoomba.
