Stranded

Klein Curaçao, Curaçao

The island of Klein Curaçao (Little Curaçao) is a small island of 1.7 sq km / 0.65 sq mi south east of Curaçao. The island has no permanent inhabitants, just some local fishermen occasionally spend the night on the island in huts. It's a windswept and featureless place, apart from a few imported coconut palms the island has very little vegetation. An old, rundown lighthouse is the only high structure. On the island's leeward side you'll find a picture-perfect, crystal clear turquoise sea with an endless white sand beach.

The windward side has been formed by the ever pounding waves rolling in from the Caribbean sea. Several ships have been washed ashore on this rough coast. In Stranded the remains of the small tanker the Maria Bianca Guidesman can be seen, it's rusty parts are scattered along the shore. The choice of a long shutter speed in this images creates a nearly ghostly effect, when the crashing waves are captured as a mysterious fog.
