Buachaille Etive Mòr

13 November, 2011

The Buachaille Etive Mòr, an iconic mountain at the head of Glen Etive near Glencoe in Scotland.

This one was shot at dawn, about half an hour before sunrise. It's quite obvious why this time of the day is called the blue hour :). Even on the most grey and dreadful days, the light will nearly always be beautiful somewhere in the hour before sunrise or after sunset. It's one of the reasons why I always try to be at a location an hour before sunrise - if the sunrise itself doesn't turn out to be interesting, at least I've had enough time to get a shot during the blue hour.

We had tried to shoot here at sunrise for a few mornings in a row, but it was just pouring with rain. On the last morning it didn't rain and although it was heavily overcast, I got this one good shot of the Buachaille Etive Mòr. There were no colours in the sky that morning, but I think the looming darkness in this image works really well for this location.
