Marken Lighthouse

7 February, 2012

It's still cold in The Netherlands :). This morning it was 'only' -16C, rather than the -20C of past Saturday. But due to stronger winds it felt quite a bit colder!

This photo was taken almost an hour before sunrise near the lighthouse of Marken, a small peninsula in the IJsselmeer (Lake IJssel). Most of the western coast of the IJsselmeer currently seems to be covered with these amazing ice sculptures. When this cold spell started at the end of January it was still very windy and waves on the - then not yet frozen - lake covered the reeds on the water's edge in ice.

Oh well, the cold seems to come to an end after the upcoming weekend... But it was fun while it lasted :).
